Comic Rundown: Marvel Gets Dark and Dirty
Posted by on Sep 9th, 2008

Marvel posted a couple interesting tidbits on its main site today. The most interesting development is the announcement of Marvel Noir, a group of mini-series which reinvents Marvel icons like the X-Men and Spider-Man as classic 1930′s film noir. The cover images look pretty fantastic, though I’m curious where this will go. I remember DC doing a similar experiment called Pulp in the mid-90′s, though it was mostly set in continuity.  It should be good for a read, but if any of these experiments are successful – or just good – I wouldn’t mind seeing more of them in the future. Definitely check out what they have planned for Spider-Man’s film noir look.

Marvel has also announced the period following Secret Invasion will be known as Dark Reign. Brian Michael Bendis has always held Secret Invasion will have a hell of an ending, but how does it lead into Dark Reign, and even further down the road, War of Kings? Bendis says the work runs the fine line between creating an excitement level and “shock for shock’s sake” – which is a relief to hear – but it makes me wonder more and more what happens at the end of Secret Invasion. Are the Skrulls still in control? Who are the Dark Avengers Bendis will be writing after he leaves Mighty Avengers? The questions won’t be answered until 2009.

Chris Claremont is also unveiling Big Hero Six, a Japanese superhero book illustrated by David Nakayama. The team was previously led by Sunfire, who was most recently seen as a Marauder in the prelude to Messiah Complex. It will be interesting to see how Big Hero Six is fairing without their mentor, and if Claremont and Nakayama can built up this team with virtually all obscure and new characters into something promising.

The new Dark Tower series – Dark Tower Treachery – picks up with the same dynamite creative team of Peter David, Robin Further, Jae Lee and Richard Isanove tackling the origin story of Stephen King’s Gunslinger series. This series picks up when Roland and his comrades return to Gilead and Roland’s father forms a posse against the Big Coffin Hunters his son faced in the earlier series.

Deadpool #1 re-opens a series for our favorite merc with the mouth right in the center of Secret Invasion.  Daniel Way of Wolverine: Origins writes this series, which has Deadpool running his mouth and his gun at the not-so-secret invasion of Skrulls. I liked the last two Deadpool series, so I’d be willing to pick this one up, but I’m cautiously optimistic at best about what Way can do with the character – I liked previous writer Fabian Nicieza a lot, so it will take a lot to get to that standard.

The big thing, of course, is Secret Invasion #6, the issue which Bendis promises will send a chill down your spine in the end – guaranteed. Is this the turning point for the heroes of Earth, or just the opposite, and how does it set up for slated crossovers like Dark Reign and War of Kings? We’ll know soon enough, it seems.

Secret Invasion also hits the Inhumans just as Medusa undertakes an investigation with the rest of the Inhumans to uncover the fate of her husband, Black Bolt – replaced by a Skrull, way back in New Avengers: Illuminati #6. This is number one on my pullbox list – I love the Inhumans, and I can’t wait to see them play a role in Secret Invasion!

Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young Avengers #3 is starting to look a bit long in the tooth though, as we already know most of what happens with the Runaways in their own book, which just restarted a week ago. However, we still don’t know much about what happens to the Young Avengers, and with their fate already in limbo in general due to Alan Heinberg’s general absence on the comic scene these days, Secret Invasion could have heavy revelations for the young team.

DC gets involved with the Election Season as Green Lantern, Superman, Batman and of course, Green Arrow struggle to stop a villain from assassinating Presidential candidates, and of course, struggle with their own political ideals along the way. Written by the powerhouse of Judd Winnick and Bill Willingham, this looks pretty good actually. It’s an interesting story for a very tense election season.

Final Crisis #2: Revelation marks the new Question for death by the new Spectre. Of course, this means Cripus Allen is now hunting his former partner, current Question Renee Montoya – while both of them race to stop Vandal Savage from obtaining the Spear of Destiny. Seems like a pretty engaging storyline so far- I’m sold.

Green Lantern Corps #28 not only features Kyle and Guy untangling personal issues on Oa, but also leads directly into Blackest Night, the third part of the epic trilogy which started with Green Lantern: Rebirth and lead into The Sinestro Corps War. Considering how these series are kicking Final Crisis to the curb in the epic department, I’m willing to give this title a try.

Wonder Woman #24 – by Gail Simone – takes a refreshing turn as Wonder Woman now faces a challenge not even Joss Whedon could surpass – Hollywood. When her battle with the devil himself is televised, Hollywood comes calling for the movie rights, leading to a scrutiny even Wondy might not be prepared for.

That’s it for this week – see ya next with some tidbits on how everything turned out.
