Anyone who has had to update a WordPress installation by hand knows how much of a pain in the butt it can be. Between poor speed connections and accidentally over-writing important files if you’re not careful, it can be a little irritating. Then came the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin. It automatically backed up your files, database, downloaded the latest version from the WordPress site, and installed it. All with a handy wizard to let you know what was going on. Very useful, even if it did break some folks sites.
Techie Buzz, the people who produced the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin put out an article in September saying that they’re retiring the plugin. The reason, as they state in their post, is that the same function is finally being built into the core of WordPress with the release of version 2.7.
While I hate to see this plugin go the way of the dodo, it’s a good thing because WordPress is finally getting around to making this a native function. So it presumably won’t break as many sites as the plugin has been accused of in the past. For a list of this and other features new to WordPress 2.7 just check out the WordPress 2.7 Codex.
