Twitter Commands
Posted by on Feb 1st, 2009

By now, most of us know what Twitter is and we use it regularly. This site even has a Twitter account that you can follow. It’s even become a big way for people to stay in touch and send short messages to each other about events, plans, and everything else under the sun. What most people don’t know is there are some text commands to make your Twitter experience a little more enjoyable and offer you ease of control. Most of these commands can be found on the Twitter command page. But if you send a message that just says “track ‘term’” and it doesn’t track the term but just sends the message to all your friends don’t hold us accountable, we’re just relaying the message.

Oh, and before we get asked, tweets are the messages sent and recieved by users on Twitter.

The List

Replace all words in ‘single quotes’ with the appropriate information

Universal Commands

  • @’username’ – reply to a post by another user
  • D ‘username’ – send a direct message to another user 1
  • WHOIS ‘username’ – retrieves the profile information for any public user on Twitter
  • GET ‘username’ – retrieves the latest Twitter update posted by the person
  • NUDGE ‘username’ – reminds a friend to update by asking what they’re doing on your behalf.
  • FAV ‘username’ – marks a person’s last twitter as a favorite 2
  • TRACK ‘term’ – subscribe to tweets containing this term
  • UNTRACK ‘term’ – remove subscription created by the track command
  • UNTRACK ALL – delete entire list of tracked terms
  • TRACK – return a list of all terms you are tracking
  • STATS – returns your number of followers, number you’re following, and which words you’re tracking
  • #’term’ – Hashtags have become a way of “tagging” tweets to make them easier to search 3

Phone/Device Commands

  • INVITE ‘phone number’ – will send an SMS invitation to a mobile phone
  • ON – turns all phone notifications on
  • ON ‘username’ – turns on notifications for a specific person on your phone
  • OFF – turns all phone notifications off
  • OFF ‘username’ – turns off notifications for a specific person on your phone
  • STOP, QUIT – stops all messages to your phone immediately
  • FOLLOW ‘username’ – start receiving notifications for a specific person on your phone
  • LEAVE ‘username’ – stop receiving notifications for a specific person on your phone

Most of these commands are built into the Twitter user-interface that you see on your page after you log in. However there are a few that aren’t, that’s why we made you this cheat sheet. I hope it comes in handy when conversing with us or any of your other Twitter friends.
