I know I’ve been too quiet these last few weeks, but I’ve had some family issues to work through. I’ve also recently acquired a new (used) XBox360 and have been trying to set it up as a relay station for my primary PC, so I can access media files on it from my living room via a wireless connection. This is not a trivial project, unfortunately.
However, I simply have to pass along a reminder to WotG-Land that the latest release of Ubuntu Linux, version 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope,” is all set to be unleashed on the masses at some point this coming Thursday, 23 April. This includes most of your favorite Ubuntu variants as well: Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and so on. If you simply can’t wait another 72 hours, give or take, you can snag the release candidate right now from most major Ubuntu mirrors. This can always be updated to the full release version once it goes live.
The Official Linux Distrubution of WotG has certainly come a long way in a comparitiely short time; sometimes I forget that Ubuntu is only about five years old, and still a fresh-faced youngster compared to some of the “dinosaur” distros like Debian (on which Ubuntu is based), Slackware, and SUSE. Yet it has become, in that relatively brief period, quite possibly the world’s most popular end-user flavor of Linux, combining the power and flexibility of a full Debian installation with a level of user-friendliness and ease of use rarely seen outside of a Windows or MacOS environment. And while this has its detractors within the world of “hardcore” Unix geeks… well, that’s why there are so many Linux distributions out there for different levels of user experience — and nobody said Ubuntu couldn’t be configured as an advanced distro if you wanted it that way.
Stay tuned for a more thorough review of Ubuntu 9.04 within the coming days…
