Well, Amazing Spider-Man Family #8 has an eclectic mix of stories within – some good and some bad. The first story deals with life for the man on the street during Dark Reign, as it examines one man whose life has been changed by the webslinger, and now that Norman Osborn’s calling the shots, it’s about the change back. The real focus is a new Spider-Girl story with May Parker contending with her new “cousin” – April Reilly, former clone of Spider-Girl. From there, things get a little weird – first with the final adventure of . . . sigh . . . Spider Ma’am aka Aunt May (thanks a lot, One More Day, for keeping this character alive.) And after that you have the adventures of May Porker . . . spectacular Swiney-Girl. Usually you can’t go wrong with Spider-Girl . . . but that was before they paired her with Spider-Ma’am and Swiney-Girl.
Captain America: Reborn #1 also ships this week, and despite my objections, the summary reads pretty good. Marvel isn’t bringing Steve Rogers – instead his friends and allies have stepped up the task. Unfortunately, this all still fits into Red Skull’s overall plan to destroy Captain America once and for all. The “Monkey Paw” like overtones sound really interesting – will they bring back Cap, or something far more sinister?
Deadpool: Merc With a Mouth #1 also ships this week. If you missed it way back in Marvel Zombies 3, an alternate reality version of Deadpool was the first zombie to attack the main reality of Marvel. Unfortunately, he would end up on the receiving end of the swamp boat’s propeller blades. What follows is the strangest crossover in Marvel Universe, as Deadpool must team up with his zombified version’s remains – namely just his decapitated head – on a madcap mission in the Savage Land? What happens when you mix the Merc with a Mouth with the Merc with Just a Mouth? Sheer hilarity, I suppose.
Next up, we have the controversial Marvel Divas #1. Supposedly Marvel’s answer to “Sex and the City”, Marvel Divas stars Black Cat, Firestar, Photon and Hellcat in a soapish series charting the up’s and down’s for some of the hottest babes in the MU. The J. Scott Campbell cover is worth every penny, but the constant references to “Sex and the City” as well as the book’s Parental Advisory has some fans worrying what Marvel’s intentions are for these lovely ladies.
And lastly, the Dark X-Men debut in Uncanny X-Men #513. Norman Osborn adds a team of X-Men to his growing collections of super-time – but the line-up is just as surprising as the name. Emma Frost. Professor X. Cloak and Danger. What in blue blazes is going on here?
