DC at least has the right idea for this team of years, with the release of the graphic novel “Batman: Monsters”, which features work by James Robinson, Alan Grant and Warren Ellis. The trade collects three stories pitting Batman against a different kind of monster – including werewolves, cyborgs and lastly Clayface!
And of course, DC picked the best time of year to release the fourth issue of “Blackest Night”! Things are getting so bad that Earth might need to be evacuated to avoid the Black Lantern plight, while Hal Jordan journeys off-world to uncover the secrets behind just what the Black Lanterns are after – and why they have come to be.
The Black Lantern action continues in the conclusion of “Blackest Night: Titans”, which has the entire team facing off with friends both long-since and recently deceased. The first Hawk has killed and converted his successor into a Black Lantern, and now they are hunting the last remaining Dove – while Donna Troy has been bitten by her deceased son and infected with some sort of Black Lantern virus. Its Teen Titans Dawn of the Dead-style!
I picked up some recent issues of “Justice Society of America” and I’m really digging the new team of Matthew Sturges and Bill Willingham. They have some big shoes to fill in the way of Geoff Johns, but they seem to be doing pretty well so far. Dr. Fate is cool once again – stemming from the late Steve Gerber’s work on the new character – we see Dr. Fate like we’ve never seen him before, as a newbie. In Issue #32, Mr. Terrific has apparently been murdered – an event which pushes the team to the breaking point.
That’s it for this week, but with plenty of holiday treats (albeit the wrong holiday!), you can’t go wrong with getting into the spirit of the season (though which season is debatable.)
