Comic Rundown: Cap is Back
Posted by on Dec 15th, 2009

Say what you will about Tony Daniel – the architect of Battle for the Cowl – but in terms of art, Daniel’s Batman looks creepy. Making the new Batman back a creature of the night might not be enough to stop a gang war centering on Black Mask, especially as Batman’s attempt to stop the violence is interrupted by a face from the past. The comic also stars Oracle and Penguin, further amping up the drama!

Dr. Fate teams up with Hal Jordan in The Brave and the Bold #30, written by J. Michael Stracyznski. From the cover, it doesn’t appear to be the new Kent V. Nelson Dr. Fate – much to my disappointment – but it still seems like a cool crossover, as it puts two guys who can do pretty much anything with their powers in the same mission together. Plus, Hal Jordan’s fly-in-the-face of authority probably won’t bode well for one of the powerful magicians in the DCU.

In Green Lantern Corp #43, things are already looking pretty bad. The Black Lanterns are razing Oa. Kyle Rayner is presumed dead. The Blackest Night is coming to pass . . . and if all that weren’t bad enough, Guy Gardner is so angry, he’s turning into a Red Lantern. If anyone can make it work, it’s Guy Gardner – but the last Green-turned-Red Lantern – Laira – was left a snarling shell of herself and killed by Sinestro (thus becoming a Green-turned-Red-turned-Black Lantern). Hopefully Guy won’t suffer a similar fate…

Blackest Night continues in Justice League of America #40, where the remnants of Vixen’s team faces a Black Lantern Justice League formed with an ever-growing number of foes and friends who want to eat their heart out. With the Black Lantern’s numbers already including fallen heroes like Firestorm and Martian Manhunter along with recently-possessed heroes like Superman and Green Arrow, it’s looking really really bad for the current League.

And in “The Outsiders #25″, Blackest Night continues as the the Black Lantern Terra, survivor (if you can call her that) of the Black Lantern attack on the Titans HQ,  shows up at her brother’s doorstep. The team has to make even more difficult choices without Batman or Green Arrow to help ‘em out, and given how many dead buddies are showing up for the party, they’re going to be lucky to even make it out alive.

Well, that’s it for this week, but between Black Lanterns and Captain America each coming back from the grave, you should have enough reading material.
