Comic Rundown: Marvel Get Whiplash
Posted by on Dec 1st, 2009

If Marvel Divas was Marvel’s answer to Sex and the City, Black Widow and the Marvel Girls looks to be Marvel’s answer to Charlie’s Angels. The book has Black Widow taking center stage as she recalls her escape for Soviet special ops, with the help of a few unlikely allies, including the Enchantress, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel. Giving how well Marvel Divas turned out, this could be a good start. Black Widow is one of the most underutilized main characters in all of Marvel, but with Iron Man 2 hitting theaters in May, Marvel certainly aims to change that.

The next chapter of Stephen King’s literally magnum opus stars with The Dark Tower: The Battle of Jericho Hill. The battle which spells the end of everything Roland knows and the beginning of the Gunslinger begins, with Jae Lee returning to penciling duties. With at least one more Gunslinger mini-series in the work, this is shaping up to be a consistently collectible read!

The creative team behind the web hit “High Moon” take on Marvel’s favorite Russian super-team in “Hulk: Winter Guard.” The book spotlights the team of Crimson Dynamo, Ursa Major, Red Guardian, Darkstar and more – until a sinister Presence threatens one of their own. It looks to be a tie-in to the upcoming “Fall of the Hulks”, but we haven’t seen much of these characters lately and the fresh creative team leaves me hopeful for a red dawn for these Cold War relics.

Also tying into Iron Man 2, Iron Man vs. Whiplash introduces the all-new Whiplash . . . who probably looks a lot like Mickey Rourke under his mask. Despite the tie-in status, the book has me excited since its written by the FlashForward team of Brannon Braga and Marc Guggenheim. Hopefully this book will provide an in-continuity taste of things to come in Iron Man 2.

And last but not least, it was a long time coming – but Deadpool finally joins the ranks of X-Force in the X-Force Annual. As undead Acolytes scour Utopia for Magneto and White Queen, they instead come mouth-to-mouth with the fast-talking merc who never shuts his. The annual also includes Wolverine’s top secret mission to a Hydra base – and search for a clue to mutantkind’s decreasing numbers.
