Blackest Night doesn’t take a holiday break, and its rears its head to torment the current JSA in Blackest Night: JSA. Written by Starman and original JSA writer James Robinson, the issue pits Mr. Terrific and Dr. Midnite against their past counterparts, and also features a terrifying battle between Sand and his mentor, Wesley Dodds – the Golden Age Sandman. Given how well Robinson wrote Dodds in the pages of Starman, I’m really looking forward to this tie-in, which includes a terrifying Black Lantern twist.
Green Lantern #49 puts the focus on John Stewart, whose having a worst Blackest Night than most. The entire planet of Xanshi Stewart was responsible for accidentally destroying has risen from the grave along with his wife Katma Tui – all as literally heart-rendering Black Lanterns. And if he survives that, he has to deal with Fatality, his arch-nemesis turned passionate Star Sapphire, who wants something from Stewart.
The new Dr. Fate is acting strange in Justice Society of America #34, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg for a team already ripped apart by the younger members of the exodus. Still, I really liked Kent V. Nelson – a complete newbie – under the helmet of Dr. Fate, and struggling to figure out how to use his powers, with absolutely no magical mentoring whatsoever. I hope Bill Willingham uses him well in the months to come on the title.
The family that slays together, stays together. At least that’s what supervillain Deathstroke the Terminator and his sometimes-hero daughter Ravager are learning in Teen Titans #78 as they face off against their victims and family alike, now Black Lanterns. Of course, the two will have to do without killing one another if they are to survive the night.
And lastly World’s Finest #3 features an unlikely team-up between the newest Batgirl and Supergirl against the likes of Toyman and surprisingly, the mostly-heroic Catwoman. We haven’t really seen much made of the pairing of Batgirl and Supergirl since the days of Crisis on Infinite Earths, so this could be a very interesting team-up.
That’s it for now – there should be enough to fill your stockings this week – happy holidays!
