Comic Rundown: You and Captain Can Make It Happen
Posted by on Jan 26th, 2010

Just when the Atom was getting his bearings as deputy Indigo Lantern, his old “buddies” Hawkman and Hawkgirl want to help him get things patched up with his ex Jean Loring. The problem is, of course, Jean Loring is a murderous psychopath – and all three of them are dead, making them . . . you guessed it . . . Black Lanterns. All this and more takes place the revived title of the week – Atom and Hawkman #46.

The Black Lantern action continues in Blackest Night: JSA #2, as Jay Garrick finds himself racing against Johnny Quick, with the many faces of the JSA’s past coming back to haunt them – and feed on their heart if need be. This is also written by James Robinson – who started the Golden Age revival way back in “Starman” – and now writes for the Justice League. Hopefully his return to the Justice Society isn’t a cheap tie-in.

In Green Lantern #50, Hal Jordan finds himself pitted against a truly unbeatable enemy – a Black Lantern Spectre. To beat this powerful enemy, Hal Jordan may have to rejoin the Spirit of Vengeance – or become Parallax all over again. Meanwhile, the Red Lantern Atrocitus proves to be an unbeatable Lantern, but given his power-hungry rage, that might not be a good thing.

And speaking of Robinson’s Justice League, the team debuts in Justice League of America #41, and includes the likes of Green Lantern, Cyborg, Starfire, the new Batman and . . . errr . . . Congorilla . . . and many, many more. It’s an odd mix for Justice League, but after seeing the title flounder after Brad Meltzer’s departure many moons ago, it might be worth it. Time till tell if Robinson can make this colorful new mix really sizzle.

Supergirl #49 opens with a monumental statement – the passing of Smallville staple Lana Lang. Is the former first lady really gone, and what does this have to do with Supergirl? If DC sees it through, it’s a tragedy which could really rock the core of the Super-books with the death of such a long-lived character – either way, it’s a story worth reading.

That’s it for this week, but with both mutant zombies and Black Lantern zombies taking the pages of your favorite books, there should be enough to keep you satisfied for a while.

  1. Devin de Gruyl says:

O_O They offed Lana Lang? Whoa.

On the other hand, now I have a deep-seated fear they’ll stick a Black Lantern ring on her corpse…

    • Devin de Gruyl says:

…And not only did they off her, but they did it in an ancillary book to the main Super-titles (which is all Supergirl is)? To my sensibilities, a development like that should have been in one of the “legacy” Superman books, probably Action.

  2. Well, that’s what the solicitation says, Devin. It may or may not happen but . . .

Ughh. I didn’t think of that . . . I hope not. I don’t think it will happen though – most of the Blackest Night development seem to have passed the Superman books.

I agree, though, that its better suited for more mainstream Superman books, but placing it in Supergirl’s makes me a bit more interested to know her relation with the character.
