Comic Rundown: Cap’s Tea Party
Posted by on Feb 16th, 2010

Fan-favorite Jeff Parker’s “Avengers vs. Atlas” continues with the time-traveling team of modern day Golden Age Marvels introduced to the original Avengers’ team brought to present day. Like all good comic book introductions, the next issue (and probably the issue after that) finds the two teams smashing each to a pulp. Given the already vintage style of Atlas, this should be a pretty good smash-up for Marvel’s latest cult classics.

Without going too much into politics, you can imagine Captain America #603 is going to fly off the shelves this weekend. If you haven’t been paying attention, the last issue’s depiction of a tea bag protest (along with the Falcon observing all the protesters were white) sparked an outcry from conservative media outlets. The matter wasn’t helped by one conservative blogger, who misinterpreted the protesters to be henchmen of a supervillain (they’re not.) Anyway, hopefully this next issue makes better use of the scene, as an undercover Cap and Falcon must navigate the protest on a mission.

I’d also recommend picking up Daredevil #505, written by “Losers” creator Andy Diggle. If you haven’t heard, Matt Murdock is the new leader of the ninja assassin nation “The Hand”, and here, he goes to the Land of the Rising Sun to mobilize the organization in a new direction – but as you can imagine, he runs into some resistance quite literally. Try to pick up the Deadpool variant if you can – Deadpool has nothing to do with the plot – but the cover is hilarious!

Deadpool does play in a role in “Doomwar #1″, however, which has Dr. Doom conquering Wakanda, and the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and both Black Panthers teaming up to free the nation and stop the execution of Storm – unfortunately, the wild card named Deadpool is thrown into the mix, further complicating things. It’s a good set-up . . . but it seems so left-field. This wouldn’t have happened without a heavy amount of build-up in “Black Panther”, but since T’Challa turned over the mantle, maybe readership is down to the point no one is reading. For whatever, this cool premise is marred by a bit of a credibility issue.
