First off, for aspiring comic book creators like me, there’s “Breaking into Comics the Marvel Way #1″, which has “Marvel Ultimate Alliance” writer C. B. Cebulski giving 12 artists the chance to compete for a breakout position in Marvel’s staple. The book also includes plenty of tips and information for scribes and pencilers alike. There’s also a step-by-step guide to Marvel’s submission process (I wasn’t aware they had one, outside of ‘get an agent’) and more.
“Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers Unleashed #1″ presents probably the best Avengers book out there, and the only one untouched by the crossover shenanigans of “Siege.” Lockjaw of the Inhuman leas a team of Pet Avengers – including the likes of the Thor-Frog and more – against a new threat which just might prove deadly to one of them. Marvel doesn’t embrace Silver Age fun like this much, so it should be a good, wholesome read for anyone who doesn’t want an Avengers book locked in crossovers.
“The Mystic Hands of Dr. Strange #1″ has Strange – no longer Sorcerer Supreme – battling a mystic terrorist known as the Doktor. Featuring writing by Mike Carey (Hellblazer) and more, this one-shot further cements Dr. Strange as a master magician, separate of the deus ex machina Sorcerer Supreme status that’s dogged him for years. It should be interesting to see what Marvel does with him next.
In “Web of Spider-Man #6″, Marvel Zombies and X-Men Noir writer Fred Van Lente pens the tragic tale of Curt Connors – sometimes ally and sometimes arch-nemesis to Spider-Man, with all of this leading to the Lizard’s return in “The Gauntlet” later this year. The issue also features a Spider-Girl tale as May faces the same headache her father faced in the mid-90′s – a clone war!
