Comic Rundown: Paradise Island-Sized Edition
Posted by on Jul 27th, 2010

In Action Comics #891, Lex Luthor got a taste of the Orange Lantern in Blackest Night and now he’ll do anything to get it back. Dr. Who and Captain Britain writer Paul Cornell takes the reigns when Sueprman’s greatest adversary begins a driven – and probably insane – quest for power that could lead him returning to the top of the supervillain world – or back behind bars if he isn’t careful.

“Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #4″ places the . . . sigh . . . return of Bruce Wayne more than midway through his journey back through time. From the cover, it looks like Wild Wild West Batman, and while this is a pretty cool idea, I still dread where this story is going, if only because I like the status quo DC has set up with the rest of the Bat-family, only to jerk it away so soon. Hopefully DC has some more surprises before then.

But speaking of Bruce Wayne, the old-school Batman finds himself in an interesting situation in “Batman: The Widening Gyre #6″, the last issue of the Kevin Smith mini-series. His relationship with Silver St. Cloud now has Batman trying to put trust in the people around him – but can Batman really afford to do this when the stakes are so high for the crime fighter. This issue answers the question if Batman should . . . or should not . . . trust anyone.

In “The Flash #4″, the Flash has enough problems on his hands with the return of the original Captain Boomerang as well as the murder of Mirror Master. To make matters worst, he’s also got the Renegades – 25th Century cops patterned after members of his Rogue’s Gallery – who insist Flash will be responsible for a murder of his own in the not-so-distant future.

Wonder Woman #601 continues J. Michael Stracyznski’s controversial run on the character. Her history indefinitely altered, the new Wonder Woman must solve a mystery to reveal the massive plan the gods have set in motion, and to do that, she’ll first have to figure out just who destroyed Paradise Island.

That’s it for this week. A couple cool directions are revealed, but it’s still an easy-going week for comics, perfect for the summer-time.

How many times has Wondy been “controversially” rebooted over the years? Even before rebooting characters became fashionable?
